Your heart and lungs may actually be able to SMELL food and drinks, research has found. Olfactory receptors, which allow us to sense odours such as brewing coffee, were previously thought to exist only in the nose, but scientists have now discovered them in internal organs. This could help explain why food and drinks emit numerous odour components, but the nose can only detect a small fraction of them.
