“My Dear Michael, Jim Watson and I have probably made a most important discovery. We have built a model for the structure of des-oxy-ribose-nucleic-acid (read it carefully) called D.N.A for short”. So begins the letter that in 1953 Francis Crick wrote to his 12-year-old son Michael. In it, he described the amazing discovery he and Watson had just made. The document, which includes a sketch of the double-helix, was sold for $5.3 million dollars in an auction. Half the proceeds will go to the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, California.
