A special strain of Escherichia coli produces diesel on demand. The gut microbe was genetically modified with DNA from other bacteria to make fuel molecules from fatty acids. The modified E. coli is being fed on sugar and yeast extract, but the researchers believe the microbe could eat organic waste to produce the fuel.
